5.3 IMALT
1. What is media ?
Media ( the prulal of medium) is communication channels through which we disseminate news, music, movies, education, promotional message and other data. It is includes physical and online newspaper and magazines, television, radio, billboards, telephone and the internet. Li-Ling Kuo said that a medium is called an educational medium when it transfers message to teach (Li-Ling.1996). He added that the use of media is important and it is impossible to coordinate teaching and learning wiithout using media (Li-Ling.1996). Media is flexible in that it can be used for all levels of students and across all subjects.
2. Roles of Media
👉The primary role of media is communication. It allows the relay of information from one person to another, using mobile phones,radio and televisions for news updates, the newspaper, the internet and email.
👉Media act as watchdogs for democratic accountabilitiy and the implementation of governance manifestos, creating public awareness of malpractice. Its adversarial roles are to monitor and evaluate government for transparency and accountability.
👉Entartainment; from the movies shown on the television, the different reality and talent search shows, magazines, social media (Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram, Pinterest).
👉Creation of awareness and sensitization. The local radio reaches out to the rural and the vulnerable groups. Creating awareness on different programs that can benefit them. It enlightens the public about their rights, policies and how it affects them both directly and indirectly.
👉Socialization; televisions have shaped the attitude and behavior of people. The portrayal of different characters in the movies and shows have greatly affected the behavior and culture of people that affect family and societal relations.
3. Method
The learning media methods are the role playing method, the field trip method, the problem based learning, the learners by showing a video or film, a photo or an image through a projector.
4. What are technologies for learning ?
Technology plays an important role in learning, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic. Technology can be used to facilitate, accelerate, and streamline the learning process in class. Some examples of the use of technology in learning, for example: Teachers make video tutorials for students to learn independently, complete with competency test questions. Another example is the existence of applications for remote face-to-face such as zoom, google meetings. There is also provision of material online, via google classroom, whatsapp. And there are still many applications available that we can download on the technology media we use today (gadgets). Note: "Technology will not replace teachers, but teachers who use technology will replace teachers who don't!"
5. Technology and instructions in EFL classroom context
Classroom context is the way a teacher chooses to manage the daily concerns of teaching that indirectly shapes the perceptions of students. In EFL Classroom context a lot of applications we can use in our gadget as a technology we have. For example, we can install U-dictionary in our gadget to translate the sentences.
